The Minimum Viable KJ Rig

A practical overview of the minimum equipment categories required to run a dependable first karaoke show without buying unnecessary extras.

Start with a complete signal path

A basic rig needs a reliable source computer, karaoke software, an audio interface or mixer, amplification, microphones, a singer display, cabling, and safe power distribution. Buying one expensive component does not compensate for a missing link in that chain.

Minimum categories

  1. Computer and software: a machine dedicated to the show, with local music access and an offline backup plan.
  2. Audio control: a mixer or interface with independent microphone and music control.
  3. Speakers: enough clean output for the room without running at maximum level all night.
  4. Microphones: at least two working vocal microphones, plus a ready spare.
  5. Display: a screen singers can see without blocking walkways.
  6. Cables and power: tested spares, extension cords rated for the load, surge protection, and safe cable routing.

Spend first on reliability

Cases, spare cables, backup playback, microphone protection, and a tested load-in system often matter more than decorative lighting. A modest system that works every week builds a better reputation than an impressive system that regularly fails.
